In the mid 80s, Burroughs asked Dean to write a letter about centipede venom that he could include in his novel, The Western Lands; it appears in the text unedited, and Dean is thanked in the books acknowledgments. You know, a surrealistic thing. Burroughs replied to Dean, I think you have written a very good childrens book, though perhaps a little too complex and literate for juvenile reading. Over the years that followed, their correspondence and friendship escalated, Burroughs sending letters to Dean in Ecuador, Ghana, Suriname, and Costa Rica, giving advice on writing and asking Deans advice on art, inviting him to visit at his home in Lawrence, Kansas.
